Con qué soltura y ligereza se habla en el PAC de tender puentes

A pesar de la seria crisis económica que azota a los estadounidenses, en el reciente proceso electoral estos ofrecieron al mundo entero una cátedra de civismo, respeto y comportamiento democrático responsable. Dicha lección de patriotismo debería servir de enseñanza y ser aprovechada por todos, en especial por los que se dedican a la política.

El que lamentablemente no parece escarmentar ni asimilar todo lo positivo de esta situación es don Ottón Solís. En su artículo del 29 de noviembre, “TLC en un nuevo Washington”, se resume el viejo proverbio de que el ojo no puede ni siquiera ver sus propias pestañas. Don Ottón, con cierta dosis de sarcasmo, resalta el hecho de que el presidente electo Barak Obama, lejos de descalificar al senador McCain por haber perdido las elecciones, lo ha buscado para tender puentes.

Actitud democrática. Por supuesto que este es un gesto digno de destacar –aunque no debe extrañar a nadie, solo a don Ottón–, ya que ese debe ser el comportamiento en una democracia, máxime cuando se trata de estadistas y no de simples políticos oportunistas.

Lo que don Ottón debe comprender es que toda acción positiva provoca y conlleva generalmente una reacción similar. El discurso de McCain aceptando haber perdido la elección fue una pieza de oratoria que hasta al mismo Pericles, padre de la democracia, le hubiera puesto los pelos de punta. Esa es la actitud democrática de un verdadero estadista, que acepta la voluntad popular, que no lanza de forma mezquina arengas ni proclamas de fraude, y, más bien, con un gesto sincero de humildad se pone a disposición de su nuevo presidente electo.

Esa, don Ottón, es la manera de tender puentes. Esa actitud fue la que condujo de forma inmediata a Barak Obama a invitar a John McCain a una reunión a la que, dicho sea de paso, este último aceptó asistir sin ningún tipo de condicionamientos ni exigencias impertinentes.

Interés por la patria. Solo dos estadistas pudieron dejar la campaña electoral, a un mes de las elecciones, para sentarse en el Senado y votar afirmativamente un paquete de $700.000 millones para impulsar la economía. Barak Obama bien pudo haberse negado a votar dicha ley responsabilizando a los republicanos de tan caótica situación y así sacar ventaja para sus aspiraciones. No obstante, prevaleció el interés incondicional por la patria.

En contraste, los señores del PAC –que de puentes poco conocen– se la pasaron dos años y medio sin presentarse a formar quórum en la Asamblea Legislativa para que no pasara la ley del TLC y, por consiguiente, poniéndole un freno al progreso del país. A los políticos del PAC esta actitud los hincha de orgullo, pero estadistas como Obama y McCain calificarían este proceder como antipatriótico y totalmente irracional.

Con qué soltura y ligereza se habla en el PAC de tender puentes, de generosidad y de humildad, pero con la intransigencia y tozudez que los caracteriza. Cuánta dificultad tienen para aplicar esas cualidades en la práctica. Un político, en el tanto tenga ínfulas mesiánicas, no escarmienta y jamás podrá entender que, en presencia de dos extremos opuestos, se ha de buscar la verdad en el medio.

Ottón Solís manipulala realidad y juega con la opinión pública

Ottonada es un neologismo –lo acabo de inventar– y se refiere a la curiosa característica de Otton Solís para que no se le pegue nada. Solís puede decir cualquier cosa, no importa cuán arbitraria, insultante y oportunista, sin que nada ocurra. O, al menos, sin que así lo parezca.

Es una especie de lubricante retórico que permite que los disparates no se queden atorados en la opinión pública y en la crítica política y periodística. Toda una virtud, desde cierto punto de vista, este teflón ideológico que le permite decir un día que los pasados comicios carecen de legitimidad, otro día, que los partidarios del TLC son financiados por el narcotráfico y, en su última salida a la prensa, en esta sección de La Nación , poner de ejemplo a Barak Obama como un triunfador espléndido –que sin duda lo es– sugiriendo, sin decirlo abiertamente –porque es parte de su escurridiza labia–, que el presidente Arias fue mezquino en la victoria. No ha superado el trauma.

La comparación relevante, entre la reciente elección de Estados Unidos y la pasada en Costa Rica, fue entre la mezquindad de Otton Solís ante la derrota en la elección y, posteriormente, en el referendo, y la bonhomía de John MaCain al aceptar la suya.

Esta última ottonada espero que no pase inadvertida y que se mantenga en las mentes de los ciudadanos costarricenses en la próxima elección. En su artículo del 29 de noviembre en La Nación , Solís hace referencia a la abrumadora mayoría con que ganó Obama a McCain (7% del voto popular); sin embargo, el 3,2% con que el pueblo costarricense le dio el sí al TLC le pareció insignificante.

Arrogancia. En su arrogante opinión, ese porcentaje no le daba legitimidad al SÍ, al punto que no reconoció los resultados inicialmente. Solís, junto con algún otro “analista” político, tiene el don de saber cuándo se gana por obtener una mayoría de votos y cuándo se pierde por obtener una mayoría de votos: una extraordinaria capacidad, pues, para el resto de los mortales, cuando se tiene una base estadística de millones de votos, el 7% está dentro de la misma magnitud que el 3,2%.

Obama ganó abrumadoramente, pero esa comparación es irrelevante en el sistema de votación directa de Costa Rica. Pero es así el curioso poder de prestidigitación política de Solís para ver las cosas a su favor y halar agua para su molino, como se puede apreciar en esta tendenciosa comparación.

Los costarricenses con sentido común, que somos la mayoría, podemos percatarnos con este ejemplo del ramplón mimetismo político y manipulación de los hechos a que recurre Solís. No toleremos más ottonadas a Solís ni a ningún otro político que juegue con la opinión pública para satisfacer sus ambiciones de poder.

Got an email today that reminded me of these two bottles of Chartreuse liquor I have on my bar. I got these from a monastery some 5 years ago when I spent summer on the South of France.

So I went looking for these bottles in my bar, and I found them sitting there next to a bottle of a 70% ABV Absinth my wife got my from Czech Republic also a couple of years ago. I also found some Arak.

Finding them got me thinking how I have neglected my collection of international liquors (having 5 bottles left doesn’t really make it a collection anymore).

But I suddenly felt proud of my little green bottles, so, I decided to portrait them before I finally drank them all…

El artículo habla de todos los atrasos que durante muchos años han sufrido las construcciones de 3 carreteras que, en 1995, son urgentes por finalizar. Son apenas 24 kilómetros, pero desde hace 25 años están en construcción. Así "avanza" la carretera de circunvalación. ?Cuánto habrían tardado las autoridades nacionales para levantar una obra como la Gran Muralla China, de 2.400 kilómetros, entre valles y montañas?

Entrabamientos burocráticos mantienen frenadas cuatro obras viales multimillonarias, las cuales padecen -desde hace más de un decenio- una anemia crónica. Lo paradójico es que el Estado, que debería ser el gran impulsor, es uno de los principales responsables de esa marcha a paso de tortuga.

La seria crisis fiscal agrega otro obstáculo al avance de tales proyectos que se han tornado sempiternos, no obstante la urgente necesidad para el país de contar con ellos.

Es el denominador común de la Costanera Sur -específicamente el tramo Barú-Palmar Norte ($42 millones), de las vías de circunvalación ($15 millones inicialmente) y de las rutas Florencia-Naranjo ($35 millones) y Ciudad Colón-Orotina (un estimado de $80 millones).

Carrera con obstáculos

Sin embargo, quienes en alguna oportunidad han tratado de salvar la vida de estos proyectos consideran que hay tres factores que los tienen en cuidados intensivos: los entrabados procesos licitatorios, incluyendo las apelaciones; la lentitud con que la caja única del Estado gira los dineros para el pago de construcciones, y, por último, la poca seducción que despiertan entre los políticos por su alto costo y lento avance.

Para Gerardo Acosta, jefe de la Gerencia de Proyectos del Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT), las obras que demoran más de cuatro años en construirse y abarcan grandes porciones de los presupuestos no parecen ser atractivos ante los ojos de los políticos pues, aparte de demandar una fuerte inversión, no se verán los frutos dentro de su período de gobierno.

Bernardo Arce, titular del MOPT, sostiene que el problema es de fondos ya que, solo por citar un ejemplo, el último tramo de la carretera de circunvalación, de apenas 4,8 kilómetros, tiene un costo, únicamente en expropiaciones o derechos de vía, de 3.500 millones de colones... el monto autorizado para todas las inversiones durante este año.

"Es imposible dejar al resto del país sin recursos; el costo de dejar todos los demás proyectos tirados a la larga es más alto que dar todo a una obra, por más rentable que sea", argumentó.

El tramo Barú-Palmar Norte de la Costanera Sur estuvo paralizado tres años porque los dineros no se giraban, el finaciamiento era escaso y a la empresa encargada se le rescindió el contrato.

"Nunca ha habido fondos fijos para esto, y así no se puede trabajar. Se consiguen dineros a medias; en una oportunidad se llegó a adeudar a las constructoras 2,5 millones mensuales por problemas de flujo de caja", explicó Acosta. Trabas enternas

Arce explicó que el MOPT tiene para este año -entre recursos propios y préstamos- alrededor de 47.000 millones de colones; sin embargo, las autoridades presupuestarias solo permiten gastar 15.000 millones.

Proyectos como el de Ciudad Colón-Orotina, cuyo financiamiento está disponible desde 1989, no es posible que avancen porque no se gira el dinero de acuerdo con las necesidades de la obra.

En este momento, la ruta tiene la firma consultora contratada, los puentes licitados y la mitad de los derechos de vía adquiridos por 700 millones. No obstante, falta un monto igual a ese para tener libre el paso de construcción, especificó Acosta.

Para el ministro Arce, el problema no termina ahí: "Tenemos licitaciones que demoran más de un año por apelaciones sin sentido, diseños malos y procedimientos altamente entrabados. El Ministerio de Hacienda no permite que se giren dineros, aunque se tengan. La gente apela cuando quiere porque nadie los sanciona", alegó.

En esto concuerdan Carlos y Fernando Sánchez, de la empresa constructora Sánchez-Carvajal, quienes están sufriendo el calvario de las apelaciones en el caso de la vía Florencia-Naranjo cuando ya les habían adjudicado la primera etapa de 7 kilómetros.

"Tiene que darse urgentemente un mecanismo de sanción a las apelaciones. Hay empresas que se dedican a apelar por apelar, a veces no solo por ganar un porcentaje a cambio de quitarla, sino por derrumbar un concurso", denunció Carlos Sánchez.

Esta nueva ruta a San Carlos -próspero cantón de la zona norte- nunca ha conseguido un novio que la financie. Siempre fue cortejada, pero nadie se ha decidido a pedir su mano, pese a que disminuiría los costos de operación para los usuarios, acorta el tiempo de viaje a casi la mitad del actual y ofrece un trazado más seguro.

Según explicó el jefe de proyectos del MOPT, Gerardo Acosta, cuando se tomó la iniciativa de reactivar la obra, se determinó que el diseño estaba inconcluso: faltaban 13 puentes, cuyo diseño actualmente cuesta16 millones de colones.

Otro problema son los derechos de vía. Aunque el 80 por ciento de la gente está dispuesta a ceder terrenos para levantar la obra, el pago del 20 por ciento restante requiere una inversión de 250 millones.

Ahora se está trabajando en la etapa Ciudad Quesada-Buena Vista con recursos propios del MOPT, y se espera que para 1997 esté todo el trayecto licitado. Sin embargo, si para ese fecha no se consolida el préstamo anunciado por Taiwán, el Estado tendría que asignar alrededor de 2.300 millones de su presupuesto para financiarlo, y nunca se ha podido destinar tanto dinero a un solo proyecto.

?Sabía usted que... ?

Esta es una lista de los entrabamientos que más han contribuido a que grandes obras sigan durmiendo el sueño de los justos:

La orden de inicio para el tramo de la costanera sur Barú-Piñuela-Palmar Norte, cuya extensión es de 60 km, se dio en octubre de 1983 y apenas se ha superado el movimiento de tierras.

El diseño de la carretera de circunvalación se ideó en los años 50, la construcción arrancó en los 70 y 25 años más tarde no se ha podido concluir, pese a que todo el trayecto mide 24,3 kilómetros, de los cuales 4,8 kilómetros aún faltan... Casi un año para cada kilómetro.

Una tramitación de financiamiento externo demora entre 3 ó 4 años para su aprobación.

Algunas empresas constructoras se dedican a apelar adjudicaciones en procesos licitarios, para luego cobrar un porcentaje a la empresa adjudicataria a cambio de retirarla y no entrabar el proceso.

Una apelación de un proceso licitatorio puede demorar hasta un año en resolverse.

El crédito por $40,2 millones del Banco Internacional de Desarrollo para la carretera Ciudad Colón-Orotina estuvo a punto de perderse por escasos 5 días ya que el cartel de licitación para la supervisión privada de la obra se hizo deficientemente durante cuatro años seguidos, lo cual ocasionó tres apelaciones, cuyo tiempo de resolución fue de un año cada una y tres veces se declaró desierto.

No construir la obra entre Ciudad Colón y Orotina le cuesta al Estado, en costos de operación, $25 millones al año.

Por más de diez años se hablaba de los diseños de la ruta Florencia-Naranjo y cuando en 1993 se decide dar apoyo al proyecto se presenta un incoveniente: no incluía el diseño de ... 13 puentes. Los ingenieros justificaron el problema en la falta de recursos.

El proceso de expropiación desde que se hace la solicitud hasta que el terreno pasa a manos del Estado para poder construir una vía tiene 800 pasos que van desde llamadas teléfonicas, reuniones y tramitación de documentos.

Les informamos que todo pasajero que pasa o transita por Estados Unidos tendrá, a partir del 01 de Agosto, que informar 3 días antes de su ingreso a las autoridades norteaméricanas de su viaje, a traves del sitio de internet

Se debe llenar el formulario con apellido, nombre, fecha de nacimiento y lugar de residencia, en ese mismo sitio se da la autorización (en línea), esta debe ser impresa y adjuntarla al pasaporte para poder ingresar a Estados Unidos. Esta regla es válida para todo pasaporte que tenga o no visa para Estados Unidos.

A partir de esta autorización tendrá derecho durante 2 años de ingresar a los Estados Unidos sin informarlo. Esta formalidad no es obligatoria, pero deseable, durante los primeros 6 meses (hasta el 01 de Enero 2009), pero a partir del 02 de Enero 2009 todo pasajero que no lo haya hecho, no podrá ingresar al territorio de Estados Unidos y será expulsado inmediatamente e irremediablemente.

POR TANTO:

Se llena solo una vez por 2 años
Debemos hacerlo TODAS las personas, no importa la nacionalidad, no importa si ocupan visa o no.

BOGOTÁ (AFP) — La Corte Suprema de Justicia de Colombia determinó que bajar música de internet no constituye delito, siempre y cuando de esta actividad no se obtenga ningún provecho económico, en una sentencia divulgada este lunes.

El fallo, cuyos apartes fueron reproducidos por la prensa, señala que cuando no se obtiene lucro respecto a la obra "resulta imposible afirmar la existencia de una conducta punible".

El tribunal emitió el fallo al revertir una sentencia a 24 meses de cárcel y una multa de 2 millones (1.100 dólares) contra una persona que realizaba copias en formato Mp3 de discos de vinilo que le suministraban sus clientes.

La Corte Suprema de Justicia revirtió esa condena señalando que las copias realizadas por uso personal no podían ser penalizadas pues no provocaban un detrimento contra los intrereses de los autores.

El fallo también determinó que cuando una persona comparte la música con otras sin obtener de ello un provecho económico, no puede considerarse que afecte los derechos del autor.

Admittedly I am a ColdFusion fan boy, but I know that it isn't for everyone. Still, ColdFusion is easily the BMW (both in price and in raw engineered quality) of the web application languages out there. With ColdFusion 8 it now becomes possible to build and integrate a vast amount of functionality with only a few lines of code. Imagine letting users quickly create their own presentation by uploading photos and editing slides using a WYSIWYG editor. Then, when they are all done, they can view and share it on the web via Flash or push it to a PDF file. ColdFusion 8 lets you wrap up all this up into a tight package using heavily documented yet extremely simple tags. No scripting required!

This past year, we finally started to see sparks. It turns out that Exchange can be accessed with WebDav for the purpose of creating Exchange Items. With a little work, ColdFusion can communicate using WebDav. With a little more work, ColdFusion can create Exchange Objects.

ColdFusion users have long wanted a way to define settings per application, rather than server-wide. In truth, this is doable right now, just install multiple instances of ColdFusion an each instance gets its own CF Admin and own settings.

But, if that is not an option, then Scorpio will help, as I explained last night in Seattle. ColdFusion MX7 introduced Application.cfc as an alternative to Application.cfm. Application.cfc does everything that Application.cfm does, and added important new features (like methods that get executed OnSessionStart and OnSessionEnd).

To set application settings using Application.cfc, variables are set in the THIS scope. THIS.name to set the application name, THIS.sessionManagement to enable session state management, and so on.

In Scorpio, Application.cfc and the THIS scope can be used to define per application settings. For example, THIS.mappings is a structure which contains the currently defined ColdFusion mappings.

To set a mapping you just modify that structure like this:

In ColdFusion MX, open the file C:\Program Files\ColdFusionMX\lib\neo-security.xml. Alter

Restart the ColdFusion MX Application Server service. You can then open the ColdFusion Administrator without being prompted for a password. Enter the new password twice, but don't check the Use a ColdFusion Password box. Click the Submit button and close the browser window. Edit the admin.security.enabled node in neo-security.xml back to true again and restart the ColdFusion MX Application Server service. You will then be able to access the ColdFusion Administrator by supplying the new password.

As a side note, I found that just ticking the Use a ColdFusion Password box in the Administrator just displayed a message saying "Unable to change password" and bombed me out. The procedure above seems to work fine, though.

In ColdFusion 5 Server and earlier, run regedit and go to to

HKLM\Software\Allaire\ColdFusion\CurrentVersion\Server

Change UseAdminPassword from 1 to 0. This will allow you to get into your ColdFusion Administrator without being asked for a password.

Remember to turn on password protection from the Administrator once you get in and change the password.

Installing CFMX7.0.2 on Win Vista with IIS7

This article takes you step-by-step through the process of installing ColdFusion MX 7.0.2 on a PC running the new Vista operating system and using Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.

There are points during the installation process that can and will give you trouble if you follow directions published prior to Vista's release. Therefore, special emphasis has been given to the information you'll need to get working with ColdFusion on Vista.

Who will benefit by reading this article?

ColdFusion programmers who develop and/or run CFM pages locally (including developing CFCs) on a Vista box and who use IIS7.

There are multiple versions of Vista. I am using Vista Business Edition. However, according to the documentation, Vista Home Premium, Ultimate, and Enterprise also ship with IIS 7. Check the Microsoft web site for more information about the Vista editions. I found the Help and How-To pages useful, too.

ColdFusion Server Configuration Choices

ColdFusion pages can be served up using

Server configuration - installs ColdFusion MX 7 as a self-contained server.
Multi-server configuration - installs ColdFusion MX 7 on JRun 4.
J2EE configuration - packages ColdFusion MX 7 as a J2EE application for deployment on an existing J2EE server.

This tutorial includes a discussion of the first server configuration only. That is, the installation of ColdFusion MX 7 as a self-contained server.

Summary of instructions

To get ColdFusion MX 7 running on Vista and IIS 7 you need to do several things:

Install the metabase compatibility component of IIS 7.
Download and run the installation program, which is not entirely successful because it doesn't know how to deal with IIS 7. Fix up is done in the next two steps. In addition, there's a bug in Vista that you need to be aware of when you run the installation program.
Get the missing .dll files.
Configure IIS 7 mappings (for *.cfm and *.cfc files).

In addition, I've included a few notes about uninstalling ColdFusion at the end of the article.

Install the Metabase Compatibility Component of IIS 7

To use IIS 7 you'll need to install the metabase compatibility component. This component is not automatically installed since it's not used by IIS 7. It's there for backward compatibility. Check out this article for detailed information about the metabase compatibility component. However, before you get bogged down in that really long article, be aware that you don't need to know all the details to continue. You just need to make sure it's installed before you attempt the ColdFusion installation.

To install the metabase compatibility component:

Go to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Click Turn Windows features on or off.
The O/S will prompt you to confirm this action. The dialog, titled User Account Control, says Windows needs your permission to continue. This is a new Vista security feature. Click Continue.
In the Windows Features dialog, make sure you have checks in all the boxes under Internet Information Services > Web Management Tools > IIS 6 Management Compatibility. You'll be asked to wait while the features are configured. The name is a bit confusing at first glance. Think of it this way: you are installing into IIS 7 a component that is needed by applications that ran successfully within IIS 6.

Okay, now you're ready to start the ColdFusion installation.

Download and Run the Installation Program

Get the installation executable from the Adobe web site. Save it to your disk and then double-click it.
Click Run when you see the Open File - Security Warning dialog.
The files are extracted ...
Pick your language and click OK.
The wizard starts. Click Next to continue.
Accept the terms of the licence agreement and click Next.
If you have a serial number, input it now or just select the 30-day trial the way I did for this installation. Click Next to continue.

Now pick your configuration. The directions presented here are for the Server configuration. Click Next to continue.
Specify the sub-components to install. Click Next to continue.
Specify the installation folder. By default, the directory is CFusionMX7 at the root of your C drive. Click Next to continue.
Select the All IIS websites radio button. Click Next to continue. (Actually, it doesn't matter what you select here since the installer doesn't recognize IIS 7.)
Specify the location for the ColdFusion MX administrator. Note that a bug in Vista causes the folder name to be wrong. Be sure to replace %SystemDrive% with C: (or whatever drive letter is appropriate to your installation). Click Next to continue.

Enter an administrator password. Click Next to continue.
Enter an RDS password. Click Next to continue.
The next screen displays a summary of the configuration options you've specified so far. Click Install to continue.
Even though the installer has some problems (because of Vista and IIS 7), you're informed that the installation is complete and was successful. You'll fix the problems manually (shown below). Click Done.

The wizard instructions say that to continue, you should go to http://localhost/CFIDE/administrator/index.cfm. However, that produces the following server error:

The problem is that since the installer doesn't recognize IIS 7, it did not unpack the required DLLs and it did not configure IIS 7.

Get the Missing DLLs

So now we begin the manual work to correct problems encountered by the installer. Fortunately, Adobe has provided a TechNote that lists the steps to manually configure the web server connector. Unfortunately, these directions are for IIS 6 so you can't follow them verbatim. They give a good starting point, though.

Open the TechNote and scroll down to the section titled Microsoft IIS 6 Configuration. (Note: there are several typos in the section you need to use. Most are missing spaces between words and filenames. Read their doc carefully. I've corrected the errors here, though.)
Locate the wsconfig.jar file in the cf_root\runtime\lib\ folder. This JAR archive has a lot of files in it. You won't need all of them.
cf_root corresponds to the folder you indicated in step 10 in the previous section. If you left the dialog set at the default value, the cf_root folder is C:\CFusionMX.
Hopefully, you already have a utility that unpacks JAR files. If not, get something like WinRAR. The trial version is free for 40 days. Then is $29 (USD). If you use WinRAR, just drag and drop the files from the WinRAR utility to the appropriate directory. It's simpler to do it that way instead of using WinRAR's Extract to button because Extract to, by default, retains folder information, which you don't want.
Extract jrun_iis6.dll and copy it to to cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\.
You'll find this file in the connectors\isapi\intel-win\prebuilt folder of wsconfig.jar.
Create a new folder in cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\ named 1 (the number one).
Extract and copy jrun_iis6_wildcard.dll to the folder you just created (cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1). You'll find jrun_iis6_wildcard.dll in the connectors\isapi\intel-win\prebuilt folder of wsconfig.jar.
In the cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1 folder, create a file called jrun_iis6_wildcard.ini. The file should contain the following:

Note that you'll need to replace cf_root as appropriate to your installation. For example, C:/CFusionMX7. Note the use of the forward slash rather than a back slash.
In addition, be sure to use the correct bootstrap. The TechNote lists two values, one for MX 6.1 and the other for MX 7. The only difference is the port number. MX 7 uses port 51011.
Create a file called jrunserver.store in the cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1 folder. The file should contain the following:

Here again you specify the port number according to your version of MX. Port 51011 is used for MX 7.

The rest of the steps in this TechNote pertain to IIS 6 so you can safely skip them.

Next you need to configure IIS 7 to handle the ColdFusion mappings.

Configure IIS 7 Mappings

In this section you'll make some changes to IIS 7 so that it recognizes and knows how to deal with ColdFusion files. You'll need to add two mappings. One for ColdFusion components (*.cfc) and another for ColdFusion pages (*.cfm).

Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. (You'll get the security prompt "Windows needs your permission to continue" again. Click through it.)
Double click Handler Mappings from the IIS area.
Right-click in the center area of the window and select Add Script Map... from the context menu that appears (or select the Add Script Map... link from the Actions listed on the right side).
Add two mappings. Map both of them to the jrun_iis6_wildcard.dll that you unpacked and placed in the cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\1\ folder (see step 5 in the previous section).

After you click OK in the Add Script Map dialog,

When you're done, the Handler Mappings list look like this.

The newly added mappings get added to the bottom of the list but when you refresh you'll see the list sorted according to the values in the Path column.

You may have noticed that you're not using the jrun_iis6.dll that you extracted from wsconfig.jar and placed in the cf_root\runtime\lib\wsconfig\ folder. This is a bit of a mystery to many people. I found that it's not needed, though the Adobe TechNote says you need to put that dll in the wsconfig folder. My guess is that this direction is for IIS 6 only, which I didn't test.

Uninstall ColdFusion MX 7.0.2

When you uninstall ColdFusion you end up with some "turds" - this is, files that should have been deleted but weren't. That means you need to do the clean up manually.

Initiate the uninstall by going to Start > Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Select Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7 from the list and then click Uninstall/Change (or right-click ColdFusion to see the same option).
Upon completion, you'll see a dialog that says the uninstall completed but that several files could not be removed. All of them are in the CFusionMX7 folder (in other words, the cf_root).

(By the way, I installed on my D drive so that's why this screenshot shows my cf_root as D:\CFusionMX7.)
Reboot your computer.
Manually delete the the entire CFusionMX7 folder using the File Explorer.
Lastly, you'll need to remove ColdFusion MX 7 from the program list you see when you go to Start > All Programs > Macromedia.

To remove it, delete the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Macromedia\ColdFusion MX 7 folder.

¿ CÓMO OTTÓN SOLÍS SE APROPIÓ DE TIERRAS EN EL ASENTAMIENTO CAMPESINO OSA Y DENTRO DE LA RESERVA FORESTAL GOLFO DULCE ?

Por medio de los Decretos de Expropiación # 10088 –G-H publicado el 01 de junio de 1979 y reformado por el Decreto # 10244-G del 05 de julio de 1979, el Instituto de Tierras y Colonización (ITCO), actualmente IDA, adquirió tres fincas que en conjunto medían alrededor de 25 mil hectáreas, con el objetivo de conformar el Asentamiento Campesino Osa y beneficiar a agricultores de escasos recursos. El Estado pagó los inmuebles por medio de bonos agrarios del Ministerio de Hacienda.

En fecha 11 de julio de 1979, siendo ya esas tierras propiedad del Estado por mandato de los decretos referidos, Alex Solís Fallas (hermano de Ottón Solís), quien en la escritura se manifiesta “agricultor”, adquirió de un poseedor en precario asentado sobre la finca estatal (Ismael Carvajal Beita) una porción de terreno que mide 240 hectáreas. (Escritura # 1834, otorgada a las 15: 00 hrs. Del 11 de julio de 1979 ante el Notario Olman Vargas Cubero).

En la misma fecha 11 de julio de 1979 y sobre la misma finca perteneciente al Estado, Humberto Solís Fallas, (también hermano de Ottón Solís), quien igualmente se dice “agricultor”, adquiere de otro precarista existente sobre el bien demanial (Erlinda Ureña Granados) otra parcela que mide 187 hectáreas (Escritura #1835, otorgada a las 16:00 hrs. Del 11 de julio de 1979 ante el Notario Olman Vargas Cubero).

El total de los terrenos comprados por parte de los hermanos de Ottón Solís a los precaristas suma 327 hectáreas, negociación que realizaron después de que el Estado había adquirido esas tierras con el fin de conformar un asentamiento campesino.

El ITCO, desde entonces y hasta la actualidad, por política institucional prohíbe otorgar título de propiedad por más de 300 hectáreas a un mismo poseedor. Para ello aplican por analogía el límite de área autorizado en la Ley de Informaciones Posesiones y en la anulada Ley de Titulación Múltiple. Además, para ser sujetos de titulación los gestionantes deben superar los requisitos de clasificación y adjudicación que exige la ley de Tierras y Colonización # 2825 en sus artículos 62, 63 y 64, entre los que se destacan ser agricultor y trabajar personalmente la parcela. Esta ley también prohíbe adjudicar más de una parcela por beneficiario.

En fecha 16 de agosto de 1980, Ottón Solís Fallas (quien en la escritura se declara Economista) y sus hermanos de nombres Humberto (quien ya no se pone en la escritura “agricultor” sino Médico), Alex (se indica Estudiante de Derecho), Marvin, Rafael, y María Mayela (estudiantes), sin que se indique ni conozca el título de adquisición de sus derechos pero siempre con relación a la finca que le pertenecía al Estado desde hace más de un año atrás, le venden 77 hectáreas que formaban parte de ese bien estatal al señor Juan de Dios Mata Ureña, de oficio comerciante. (Escritura 2825 otorgada a las 07:00 hrs. Del 16 de agosto de 1980 ante el Notario Olman Vargas Cubero).

Cuando Ottón Solís y sus hermanos hacen la supuesta venta de esa parcela no habían sido declarados beneficiarios y adjudicatarios del ITCO, siendo poseedores en precario sobre un bien del Estado. En la misma escritura se reconoce por parte de los vendedores que el inmueble que le traspasan a Juan de Dios “es la parcela 2-97 del ITCO”; es decir, Ottón y sus hermanos tenían claro conocimiento de que estaban vendiendo bienes del Estado, los que están fuera del comercio de los hombres y no son susceptibles de apropiación por particulares, según el artículo 262 del Código Civil .

Ese parece ser un contrato tan solo de papel, simulado, con el que Ottón Solís y sus hermanos buscan burlar el límite de área que el ITCO establece en 300 hectáreas para titular tierras a un solo beneficiario; lo anterior se deduce no sólo por lo irrisorio del precio (las 77 hectáreas fueron vendidas en 10 mil colones con la consecuente evasión fiscal al no pagar los timbres e impuestos reales), sino por la cercanía familiar entre los contratantes (el supuesto adquirente, Juan de Dios, era esposo de María Virginia Solís Fallas, hermana de Ottón Solís y de los restantes propietarios), y porque años más adelante la propiedad, una vez que se habían aprovechado para titularla por medio del ITCO, fue traspasada a nombre de una Sociedad Anónima que le pertenece a Ottón Solís y sus hermanos (GANADERA GUAYACAN DEL CEIBO S.A.) regresando el bien a sus manos; además de que Giovanni Solís Fallas (otro hermano de Ottón) reconoció en una gestión posterior ante el IDA que ellos han mantenido la posesión sobre esas fincas.

Curiosamente tan sólo 2 días después de la fecha en que se firmaba la escritura en la que consta la venta que Ottón y los hermanos Solís Fallas hacen a favor de su cuñado, exhibiendo una celeridad en extremo sospechosa, la Junta Directiva del ITCO, en la sesión 2401 del 18 de agosto de 1980, declara adjudicatarios a Juan de Dios de una parcela de 77 hectáreas, y a los hermanos Ottón, Humberto, Alex, Marvin, Norberto y María Mayela, todos Solís Fallas, de una parcela de 263 hectáreas. La pregunta es: ¿ en que momento se realizaron las inspecciones de campo, la visita a los linderos de la finca, la verificación de los actos de posesión y mejoras en el terreno y la entrevista a los testigos, para determinar que esas personas clasificaban para ser adjudicatarios y beneficiarios del título ?

Además de que ni Ottón Solís ni ninguno de los adjudicatarios era agricultor, ni cumplía los requisitos de clasificación y adjudicación exigidos en la ley de Tierras y Colonización, en el expediente administrativo también existen otros señalamientos que hacen ver irregularidades en el procedimiento de adjudicación. Según oficio ST 416-2001 el Ing. Gilberto Rodríguez Soto, Coordinador del Programa de Titulación y Compensación Social, se señala que “el procedimiento no está claro”, “no se indica si a estos señores se les realizó el estudio socio económico”, “nos encontramos algunas inconsistencias”, “el trámite de escritura se generó sin estar el plano catastrado”, “se le otorgó una escritura por la parcela 2-96 por una cabida de 263 hectáreas a favor de los hermanos Solis Fallas sin valorar que estos señores habían vendido otra parcela (2-97) a favor de Juan de Dios Mata Ureña”.

Ottón Solís y sus hermanos pagaron el valor de la tierra adquirida al ITCO en la suma de 750 colones por hectárea. Y no lo hicieron al contado, sino que constituyeron una deuda con la institución firmando una cómoda hipoteca por la suma total de 213, 467.oo colones pagadera en un prolongado plazo de 25 años que corrieron del 06 de diciembre del año 1980 al 06 de diciembre del año 2005, devengando un blando interés del 4 % anual sobre saldos.

Desde el 01 de junio de 1999 la finca de 263 hectáreas adjudicada por el ITCO a nombre de Ottón Solís y sus hermanos, inscrita en el Registro de la Propiedad bajo la matrícula 41751 del Partido de Puntarenas, aparece traspasada a nombre de GANADERA GUAYACAN DEL CEIBO SOCIEDAD ANÓNIMA, que es una empresa comercial propiedad de Ottón Solís y sus hermanos. Lo anterior, no obstante que la ley no permite que sociedades anónimas y comerciantes califiquen como beneficiarios de los programas de dotación de tierras del ITCO, ahora IDA.

Igualmente desde el 01 de junio de 1999, cerrando el circulo del engaño en que se hizo incurrir al Estado para lograr titular más de 300 hectáreas, la finca de 77 hectáreas adjudicada a nombre de Juan de Dios Mata Ureña, inscrita en el registro Nacional bajo la matrícula 41749 del Partido de Puntarenas, también aparece traspasada a nombre de la misma sociedad GANADERA GUAYACAN DEL CEIBO SOCIEDAD ANÓNIMA, propiedad de Ottón Solís y su hermanos.

Ambas fincas, que suman un total de 340 hectáreas, la sociedad de don Ottón Solís y sus hermanos, la declararon, según consta en el Registro Público, en un valor fiscal que en conjunto no supera los novecientos mil colones. Es decir, que cualquier persona pobre beneficiaria de un programa de vivienda de interés social paga más impuestos que la sociedad comercial de Ottón Solís y sus hermanos por su latifundio.

No conformes con las 340 hectáreas ya tituladas de manera irregular, mediante un nuevo escrito fechado 13 de diciembre del 2000, Giovanni Solís Fallas (hermano de Ottón Solís) se apersona ante el IDA reclamando que, además de las parcelas 2-96 (263 hectáreas) y 2-97 (77 hectáreas), por un error el ITCO dejó de titularles en su momento otras 85 hectáreas que también les pertenecen. El terreno que solicitaba titular apenas había sido medido por los Solís Fallas en el año 2000, según consta en el plano # P-1093-2000.

Increíblemente ese nuevo inmueble que pretendían se inscribiera a nombre de la sociedad de Ottón Solís y su hermanos, en realidad se trataba de bosque primario UBICADO DENTRO DE LA RESERVA FORESTAL GOLFO DULCE, perteneciente por mandato de la Ley Forestal al Patrimonio Natural del Estado. En el mismo escrito el hermano de Ottón Solís reconoce que la sociedad GANADERA GUAYACAN DEL CEIBO S.A. pertenece a su familia y expresamente indica que “la titulación solicitada podría salir a nombre de nuestra sociedad, a nombre de cualquiera de nuestros hermanos, o a nombre de todos”. También pide en el escrito que no se le apliquen a la titulación las limitaciones que estable el articulo 67 de la ley 2825 y que no se les practique estudio de selección de beneficiarios.

En fecha 29 de abril del 2002, sesión 033-02, la Junta Directiva del IDA con un mejor criterio legal y técnico que el utilizado con anterioridad, deniega la solicitud de escriturar ese terreno de 85 hectáreas adicionales a nombre de Ottón Solís y sus hermanos. Por el contrario, declara que el inmueble que pretenden inscribir los Solis Fallas pertenece al patrimonio institucional y ordena traspasarlo al Ministerio de Ambiente y Energia (MINAE). Al día de hoy, sin embargo, Ottón Solis y su hermanos siguen poseyendo ese terreno y no han realizado ninguna devolución formal a nombre del MINAE en representación del Estado.

¿Y Juan de Dios Mata Ureña, el cuñado de Ottón Solís ? Ahora está divorciado de la hermana de los Solís Fallas, sin bienes de fortuna, trabaja como chofer, tiene su teléfono cortado (306-46-23) y en los últimos 15 años ha rodado por cinco domicilios diferentes.

Scientists have finally exceeded the speed of light, causing a light pulse to travel hundreds of times faster than normal.

It raced so fast the pulse exited a specially-prepared chamber before it even finished entering it.

The experiment is the first-ever evidence of faster-than-light motion.

The result appears to be at odds with one of the basic principles of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity, that nothing can go faster than the speed of light in a vacuum, about 186,000 miles per second.

However, Lijun Wang, one of the scientists from the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, N.J., says their findings are not at odds with Einstein.

She says their experiment only disproves the general misconception that nothing can move faster than the speed of light.

The Dojo Offline Toolkit will be a small, cross-platform, generic download that enables web applications to work offline.

Let’s look at the Dojo Offline Toolkit from a user’s perspective. Imagine Alex is using a web-based real estate application for realtors built with the Dojo Offline Toolkit. In the upper-right corner of this web application is a button that says “Work Offline.” The first time Alex clicks on this button, a small window appears informing him that this web application can be accessed and used even if he is offline. If Dojo Offline has never been installed, Alex is prompted to optionally install a small 100K through 300K download that is automatically selected for his appropriate OS, including Windows, Linux/x86, and Mac OS X/Universal Binary.

Once Dojo Offline is installed with the included installer, the web-based real estate application prompts Alex to drag a hyperlink to his desktop and bookmark the web application’s URL. As Alex works online, anything that should be available offline is simply stored locally. If Alex is offline, he can reach his application by simply double-clicking the link on his desktop, opening its bookmark, or by simply typing in its normal web address. The application’s user-interface will magically appear in the browser, even if the user is offline, and all offline data will be retrieved from and stored into local storage. Dojo Offline detects when the network has reappeared, allowing the web application to send any data stored in local storage to the web server.

Local storage is done using Dojo Storage, which allows web applications to store hundreds of K or megabytes of information inside the browser, with the user’s permission. Dojo Storage is complete and works across 95% of the existing installed base of the web, including Firefox, Safari, and Mozilla on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. The Dojo Offline Toolkit will come bundled with Dojo Storage.

Once Dojo Offline has been installed, it will work for any web application that codes to it — it is completely generic and has no application specific information in its download. Applications have a consistent, simple API they can code to, the Dojo Offline and Dojo Storage APIs, to enable offline ability. Even better, since the user always interacts with the web application through its domain name, rather than through a file:// URL or http://localhost domain name, the web application runs under the same security policies as standard web sites, which means a user’s machine will not be compromised by an untrusted web application. The Dojo Offline Toolkit will work in Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, and will run on Windows, Linux/x86, and Mac OS X/Universal Binary.

The Dojo Offline Toolkit will be fully open source, available under the same licenses as Dojo: the BSD and the AFL.

Let the robot holocaust commence: robots think we taste like bacon.

Researchers at NEC System technologies and Mie University have designed the cute little guy to the right: a metal man gastronomist, "an electromechanical sommelier", capable of identifying wines, cheeses, meats and hors d'oeuvres. Upon being given a sample, he will speak up in a childlike voice and identify what he has just been fed. The idea is that wineries can tell if a wine is authentic without even opening the bottle, amongst other more obscure uses...like "tell me what this strange grayish lump at the back of my freezer is/was."

But when some smart aleck reporter placed his hand in the robot's omnivorous clanking jaw, he was identified as bacon. A cameraman then tried and was identified as prosciutto.

Ok, so for a little history on computers design. This time about GUI development, and the Demo by Dougals Engelbart on Human Interfaces for computers, back in 1968... this is the first time ever someone uses what later was dubbed as THE MOUSE. Very interesting video to watch. It's over 1hr long, so be patient.

Douglas Englebart completed his degree in electrical engineering in 1948 and settled down in a nice job at the NACA Institute (the forerunner of NASA). However, one day while driving to work he had an epiphany: he realized that his real calling as an engineer was not to work on small projects that might only benefit a few people. Instead, he wanted to work on something that would benefit all of humanity. He recalled Bush's essay and started thinking about ways in which a machine could be built that would augment human intellect. During the war he had worked as a radar operator, so he was able to envision a display system built around cathode ray tubes where the user could build models of information graphically and jump around dynamically to whatever interested them.

Finding someone to fund his wild ideas proved to be a long and difficult task. He received his PhD in 1955, and got a job at the Stanford Research Institute, where he received many patents for miniaturizing computer components. By 1959 he had earned enough recognition to receive funding from the United States Air Force to work on his ideas. In 1962, Douglas published his ideas in a seminal essay entitled "Augmenting Human Intellect." In this paper, Douglas argued that digital computers could provide the quickest method to "increase the capability of a man to approach a complex problem situation, to gain comprehension to suit his particular needs, and to derive solutions to problems." He envisioned the computer not as a replacement for human intellect, but a tool for enhancing it. One of the first hypothetical examples he described for this technology was of an architect designing a building using something similar to modern graphical CAD software.

ESA's Mars Express has obtained images of the Cydonia region, site of the famous 'Face on Mars.' The High Resolution Stereo Camera photos include some of the most spectacular views of the Red Planet ever.

After multiple attempts to image the Cydonia region from April 2004 until July 2006 were frustrated by altitude and atmospheric dust and haze, the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on board Mars Express finally obtained, on 22 July, a series of images that show the famous 'face' on Mars in unprecedented detail.

The data were gathered during orbit 3253 over the Cydonia region, with a ground resolution of approximately 13.7 metres per pixel. Cydonia lies at approximately 40.75° North and 350.54° East.

"These images of the Cydonia region on Mars are truly spectacular, They not only provide a completely fresh and detailed view of an area famous to fans of space myths worldwide, but also provide an impressive close-up over an area of great interest for planetary geologists, and show once more the high capability of the Mars Express camera."

Cydonia is located in the Arabia Terra region on Mars and belongs to the transition zone between the southern highlands and the northern plains of Mars. This transition is characterized by wide, debris-filled valleys and isolated remnant mounds of various shapes and sizes.

Visitors to Costa Rica who insist on driving themselves do so with intuition and pure luck on not getting lock in the face of poor or lack of road signs directing them to their destination or warning of a dangerous curve ahead.

The lack of or poorly maintained directional and warning signs provoke problems for vacationers as they drive groping along the way kilometre after kilometre, in the hope they are going the right way.

And the situation gets worse at night as landmarks are completely lost to the darkness.

In some cases, lack of proper road signalization has resulted in accidents, some fatal, like the accident last week in Cartago, when two tourists died in an accident in the centre of old city. Poor signalization was the cause.

And like centre of Cartago, other cities like Alajuela, Heredia and San José, have similar problems. Missing stop or one way signs, for example, can leave a visitor totally lost and driving in the wrong direction of a one way street.

Outside of major centres, lack of or poor signage can leave a visitor completely lost or losecontrol of their vehicle.

A poll by the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) taken at the Juan Santamaría (San José) international airport shows that three out of 10 visitors give poor to bad marks to the signalization on the country's roads.

The vice-minister of the Transportes, Viviana Martín, blames the problem on the previous government, who did not dedicate sufficient resources to road signs.

Add to that signs that have been knocked down, run over, rusted out and plain out stolen, who turn around and sell them for the metal content.

Firm behind eDonkey to pay $30 million to avoid piracy claims

LOS ANGELES - The firm behind popular online file-sharing software eDonkey has agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits from the recording industry, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

New York-based MetaMachine Inc. was one of seven technology firms to receive letters from the recording industry last fall warning them to shut down or prepare to face lawsuits.

Since then, the operators of BearShare, i2Hub, WinMX, Grokster and Kazaa have reached similar agreements.

"With this new settlement, another domino falls, and we have further strengthened the footing of the legal marketplace," Mitch Bainwol, chairman and chief executive of the Recording Industry Association of America, said in a statement.

Under terms of the latest agreement, MetaMachine and its top executives, Sam Yagan and Jed McCaleb, agreed to immediately cease distributing eDonkey, eDonkey 2000, Overnet and other software versions.

The company also agreed to take measures to prevent file-sharing by people using previously downloaded versions of the eDonkey software.

A federal judge in New York, where the settlement agreement was filed, must still give final approval to the terms of the deal.

A call to eDonkey CEO Sam Yagan was not immediately returned.

The eDonkey Web site on Tuesday featured a message from the company telling visitors that the eDonkey2000 Network was no longer available, and a warning that people who steal music or movies are breaking the law.

The message concluded with "Goodbye Everyone."

EDonkey has been the most popular file-sharing network the last two years, but most of the computer users tapping into the hub of linked PCs have increasingly done so using an open-source version of the eDonkey software dubbed eMule, said Eric Garland, chief executive at BigChampagne Online Media Measurement, which tracks online entertainment.

Because many computer users still have functional versions of eDonkey or eMule, it's unlikely the shutdown of eDonkey's business operations will have much of an impact on people file-swapping on the eDonkey network, Garland said.

"These (peer-to-peer) networks have largely moved out of the hands of these companies and into the hands of developers and end users all over the world," Garland said. "A week from now, a month from now, six months from now - we're still going to see eDonkey populations."

Several file-sharing services have yet to reach settlements with the recording industry, including Warez P2P, Limewire and Soulseek.

In August, the recording companies filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the firm behind LimeWire. That case is pending.

Gas-line broadband a pipe dream?

So intense is the drive to deliver high-speed Internet service to American homes that entrepreneurs have seemingly tapped every conceivable pathway: fiber-optic cable, the air, even power lines.

Now the relentless pursuit for faster, cheaper broadband is leading to perhaps the last unclaimed conduit to your house: natural gas pipes.

Nethercomm, a San Diego-area start-up, says it has developed technology to send lightning-fast broadband and TV services via wireless signals through the pipes that deliver the fuel used to heat homes and fire up stoves.

Gas pipes serve 62% of U.S. households, says the American Gas Association. Broadband in Gas, or BIG, could give consumers a third high-speed option at low costs and speeds that far surpass today's phone and cable offerings. It also could bring fast Internet to unserved rural areas. But, so far, the idea has been met with both excitement and skepticism.

"It's been a Coke and Pepsi (battle) between cable and phone companies," says
Nethercomm founder and CEO Patrick Nunally, 42, a veteran high-tech
entrepreneur. "We're in a position to come in and provide real competition."

More important, Nunally says, the pipes could be used by pay-TV providers to compete with cable and satellite. In fact, he says, Nethercomm and local gas companies would lease the wireless spectrum to any provider for myriad services: cable giants seeking extra bandwidth for their high-definition TV channels, phone companies looking to pare their multibillion-dollar investments in fiber-optic cable, even businesses such as medical providers with high-bandwidth needs.

Gas companies, besides earning revenue from leasing their pipes, could use the broadband service to remotely monitor the integrity of their lines and read gas meters.
"I think there is a general pulse of excitement" about the technology among publicly owned gas companies, says Bob Beauregard of the American Public Gas Association, which represents 650 gas providers serving 5 million rural customers.

Nunally says he hatched the idea in 2002 while searching for a new TV and broadband artery to the home that didn't require digging up streets. Around the same time, some California utilities were stringing fiber cable through gas lines to offer broadband. But the process was expensive.
Nunally says he had a "light bulb on the head" moment: wireless. Normally, the twists and turns of a gas pipe would cause wireless signals to lose strength. But ultrawideband, a new unlicensed wireless technology, sends out pulses of radio energy across such a wide swath of frequencies that if some data packets are lost, others can easily make it to the home.

Also, federal rules that limit the strength of ultrawideband signals don't apply in underground pipes. So, Nunally says, power levels can be boosted to provide each household bandwidth of up to 6 gigabits per second, several times that of a cable provider. Yet power is low enough so that signals can share the pipes with natural gas without starting a fire, he says.

A similar initiative, broadband over electric lines, is further along, with services offered in Manassas, Va., and Cincinnati and a rollout planned for Dallas this year. But the electric companies don't offer TV services and incur high costs to bend signals around transformers.
Broadband in Gas would require installation of an ultrawideband transmitter that's linked to an Internet backbone or pay-TV facility at a gas company's network hub. A receiver would be placed at a customer's gas meter. Build-out costs are about $200 per household, Nethercomm says. By contrast, broadband over power lines costs about $600 per household, while phone and cable TV networks each cost well over $1,000 per home to build, says West Technology Research Solutions.

Broadband in Gas "really has the potential to accelerate adoption of these technologies," says George West of West Technology.

Yet some say BIG is, well, a pipe dream. "It's really easy to make these kinds of claims, but it's much harder to prove in practice," says JupiterResearch analyst Joe Laszlo.
Nunally says the company, which has tested the service, plans field trials next year in San Diego, Chicago and Atlanta. But officials of Nicor Gas in Chicago and Atlanta Gas Light say they have no such plans.

"We're intrigued by the technology, but we never got that far in our
discussions,"

says Nicor spokeswoman Margi Schiemann.

Nunally says BIG could sharply cut costs for companies such as Verizon Communications, which is spending $20 billion on fiber rollouts. Verizon and Internet provider EarthLink say they have no immediate plans to deploy it.

And Freescale Semiconductor, the ultrawideband company that was working with Nethercomm, recently shifted course to focus on its handset business. "It would be hard for anybody to say (BIG) doesn't have tremendous potential," says Freescale's Jon Adams.

Steve Irwin, the real Crocodile Dundee, dead

THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead. He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It appeared that he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest, Queensland Police Inspector Russell Rhodes said.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas where he had been filming an underwater documentary when it occurred.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Mr Irwin, 44, was killed just after 11am, Eastern Australian time.

His American wife Terri learned for the tragedy from police in Tasmania, where she had been trekking in Cradle Mountain National Park.

His friend and manager John Stainton said Mr Irwin was filming some segment for daughter Bindi's show on the reef between sessions filiming the main documentary.

It is understood Mr Irwin was killed instantly.

A source said Mr Irwin was already dead when his body was brought onto the Isle.

A source said Mr Irwin's body was being airlifted to Cairns Hospital in North Queensland for formal identification.

An Emergency Services Response Management spokeswoman said they received a call about the tragedy at 11.11 am, Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Microsoft has modified its new interface for Office 2007 after complaints from beta testers that the 'ribbon' system took up too much space on screen.
Office 2007 has ditched the traditional drop-down menu approach of most Windows applications in favour of the ribbon, which displays functions in new categories such as Home, Insert and Mailing in a strip across the top of the screen.
Microsoft says the new interface makes it easier for users to access the wide range of features in applications such as Word, Excel and Access.
However, in the next technical refresh of the Office 2007 beta, users can set the ribbon to automatically minimise whenever it is not being used, effectively making the ribbon headings look like traditional menus. (Windows has long offered a similar auto-hide option for the taskbar.)

Astronomers say Pluto is not a planet

Leading astronomers declared Thursday that Pluto is no longer a planet under historic new guidelines that downsize the solar system from nine planets to eight.

After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is - and isn't - a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.

Although astronomers applauded after the vote, Jocelyn Bell Burnell - a specialist in neutron stars from Northern Ireland who oversaw the proceedings - urged those who might be "quite disappointed" to look on the bright side.

The Devil's Advocate: Mac UI Ain't All That: The Future & History of the User Interface The Mac Observer

The current state-of-the-art User Interface (UI) we've been enjoying has remained largely
stagnant since the 1980s. The greatest innovation that has been
recently released is based on video card layering/buffering techniques like Apple's Expose.
But, there is a large change coming. Rev 2 of the UI will be based on multiple
gestures and more directly involve human interaction. Apple is clearly working in the area as some of the company's patent filings demonstrate. Nevertheless, these videos might make Mac (and Windows) users experience a huge case of UI envy, as a
lot of UI development (in XGL in particular) makes the current Mac UI seem
creaky and old fashioned.
I've been collecting these links to cool new UIs
for a while (yea, I know, what a geek). Despite its geekiness, I thought some of
you might enjoy them as well. It seems there is a good chance that
multi-gesture/multi-input (MGMI) UIs will be in our future at least on some
level (apparently they will be accompanied by no dearth of techno
music).
Basically the rest of the article has a bunch of links, and brief
